About the Scherer Organization

History

The Scherer Organization is actually a combination of numerous independent business operations, linked by a common founder (Clark H. Scherer, III), similar Bylaws and a uniform policy and procedure. All offices receive accounting, payroll, personnel and marketing services and support from the parent company.

The Scherer Companies have a unique and diverse history, and a strong record of success. Clark H. Scherer, III in St. Petersburg, Florida, formed Scherer Construction & Engineering, Inc. in 1984. From humble beginnings, with one employee, a 120 square foot garage office, a used pick up truck and its first contract worth $90,000, Scherer has grown into a strong, well established regional Design/Build and General Contracting firm. The guiding influence of the organization since 1984 has been Clark Scherer. One of the secrets to the success of the Scherer Companies has been Clark's ability to recognize quality people and create partnerships with them that provide for mutual growth and benefit.

In 1987 Scherer opened its first branch office in Gainesville, Florida. In association with Douglas Wilcox, the office was formed as Scherer Construction & Engineering of North Florida, LLC. Doug Wilcox is the President of the Gainesville office, which has developed a strong position in office/warehouse pre-engineered buildings and retail construction.

In 1990 Scherer opened its second office in Orlando, Florida. This office was formed as Scherer Construction & Engineering of Central Florida, LLC., in association with Clark Keator. Clark Keator is the President of the Orlando office, which has grown steadily and earned a respected position in the Central Florida retail construction market.

In 1995 Scherer opened it's third office in Atlanta, Georgia. This office was formed as Scherer Construction & Engineering of Atlanta, LLC. Richard Thacker is the President of Scherer Construction & Engineering of Atlanta,LLC., which has established a base in retail construction and has focused on the healthcare construction industry for the future.

In 1996 the parent company was split into two separate entities. Scherer Construction & Engineering, LLC. became a service company providing integrated accounting, payroll, financial, design and marketing services to the other companies. A new company, Scherer Construction & Engineering of West Florida, LLC. was formed in association with James A. Crookston. Jim Crookston is the President of this office. Jim was Clark Scherer's first, full time employee in the original organization, hired as a bid coordinator and Project Engineer, and has earned the position as President through hard work, undying loyalty and excellent results on projects under his direction. Construction contracts performed by the St. Petersburg office are executed by Scherer Construction & Engineering of West Florida,LLC under Jim's capable leadership.

In 1999, Scherer opened its fifth office in Macon, Georgia. This regional office was formed as Scherer Construction of Middle Georgia, LLC. Ron Howell is the President of the Macon office, which has established itself as one of the top industrial and retail design/builders in the Macon area.

In addition to these construction companies, there are other entities and partnerships which provide related services. Morgan & Smyth is a real estate firm, which assists Scherer in real estate matters. Clark Scherer, through various real estate development companies, provides full service development services, which provides the Scherer construction offices with a portion of their work.

On January 1, 1999 all the Scherer Construction enities were converted to limited liability companies. The Scherer companies all strive to maintain the best tools and equipment for its employees. From computer software to field equipment and tools, Scherer re-invests in the improvement and upgrading required to be competitive in today's demanding market. Scherer is committed to investing in its most valuable resource, its people.

For many years, people have been designing and constructing buildings. In ancient times Owners hired Master Builders. Over time, the construction industry has become fragmented and highly specialized. Scherer has been formed as a vertically integrated company, seeking to provide one-stop, full service design and construction services to its clients.

In a sense, we are seeking to return to the Master Builder concept of old. We do not have separate estimating, scheduling, or purchasing departments. Our Project Managers are expected to perform all of those functions relative to their assigned projects. We do not have separate safety, quality control or project start-up or close-out departments. Our Superintendents are expected to perform all of those functions, and be intimately familiar with all aspects of their projects. We seek to be a company of highly skilled individuals with broad knowledge and expertise across the entire scope of the construction industry; not left-handed wing nut specialists like many of our competitors.
